WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PUPPY MILL DOGS

Congratulations!  You have fallen in love and are thinking about adopting a puppy or an adult dog that has been
rescued from a puppy mill or other unfortunate circumstances.  Adorable Adoptables Dog Rescue (AADR) wants you to be aware of the following:

If you are adopting a puppy from a puppy mill through AADR, we recommend that you pay close attention to health and nutrition.  Talk with your veterinarian about this.  It is extremely important that these areas are monitored closely and treated if necessary, in order that your puppy gets the best start in life with you.

If you are adopting an adult dog from a puppy mill through AADR, you also need to work closely with your veterinarian. Some additional issues that may require attention, in addition to deworming and nutrition are:

  • Interacting(socializing).  There are usually so many dogs crammed into cages that the miller does not/will not spend time socializing them.  Petting, praise, and playtime simply do not exist for mill dogs.  Puppy mills are a strictly for-profit operation.  The goal is to produce as many puppies as cheaply and as quickly as possible for transport and sale to pet stores across the U.S.

  • General Health.  "Cheaply" means no vet care and poor-quality food.  Because of this, almost without exception, adult mill dogs have dental problems and may have skin problems which are addressed by AADR.  "Quickly" means that both male and female dogs are bred and rebred with no rest periods, until they are past their breeding life, or resold at puppy mill auctions where (unless they are rescued) they simply proceed to another miller and continue to be bred until they die or are no longer useful and are culled.

  • Confidence.  Adult mill dogs are confined to all wire cages all day every day.  These dogs have never walked on grass, they do not know what toys are.  They are not housebroken.  They do not know how to climb stairs, go through doors, jump up on couches, or ride in the car.  They have never been able to do these things before. However, with your gentle instruction and patience, they can learn "the ways of the world" and it is a marvelous thing to see a dog discover what a good home can provide. Some dogs may adjust within days or weeks, others will take months, and some may never fully adjust, but are capable of living happy lives in their own way.  Most of these dogs just need time, love, and patience.  They will learn, adapt, and thrive.

Adorable Adoptables Dog Rescue makes every effort to work individually with each dog as it enters the rescue, receives appropriate veterinary care, and lives in the rescue home.  Dogs are evaluated on a day-to-day basis to ensure that they are likely to succeed in a "normal", loving home environment.

AADR will provide to the adopter as much information as it has in it's possesion regarding history and progress of each dog as it transitions from a mill dog to a loving companion.  We hope you will share your heart and your home with one of our Adorable Adoptables.
